The public is encouraged to bring their lunch or stop by one of Downtown Cary’s restaurants and the join us on the plaza for some mid-day music! There will be picnic tables set up on the plaza for the public to sit at and enjoy their lunches and take in the music.
This series offers a great opportunity for citizens to enjoy local musical talent with family, friends, co-workers and neighbors during the lunch hour, while also taking advantage of trying out the local restaurants and exploring other Downtown businesses.

See a preview of a new exhibit case opening June 6 in the museum lobby. The case, titled Hey America!: Eastern North Carolina and the Birth of Funk, will feature audio and video clips that help illuminate the roles of African American musicians from eastern North Carolina who played prominent roles in the creation of funk. This genre of highly danceable music helped integrate dance floors across America during the middle and late 1960s.

This exhibit case features seven items associated with James Brown and some Tar Heel musicians who worked with him. The exhibit case will be on view from Saturday, June 6, through Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016, in the museum lobby. Admission is free.
To complement Hey America!, Sam Lathan, who played with James Brown and the Famous Flames, and Dick Knight, who performed with the James Brown Orchestra, will present programs in June. (Knight will be joined by Bill Myers.) More than 50 years later, these Tar Heels are still going strong! In August, Tyrone Jefferson, who served several stints as Brown’s music director from 1979 through 2006, will lead a master class and give a performance.

The exhibit Starring North Carolina! showcases costumes and props from “Blue Velvet,” including one of Isabella Rossellini’s blue velvet robes and the silicone prop called “Mr. Ear.”

In colonial times, doorstop gardens provided a self-sufficient household with foods, flavorings and herbal medicines. Take a sensory tour of the museum’s garden in the History of the Harvest exhibit. Participate in short sessions on how to use herbs in the kitchen, and create hands-on crafts to take home.
In addition, watch artist Marina Bosetti create Art Nouveau-inspired ceramic tiles that incorporate plant or animal designs.

The legendary band leader, composer, and guitarist helped pave the way for many of the great Afro-pop bands of our times, including past NCMA standouts Youssou N’Dour, Salif Keita, Baaba Maal, and the Mahotella Queens. Adé has been a bold innovator, adding guitars, percussion, keyboards, synthesizer, and even Hawaiian-style pedal steel to create a “gently hypnotic, polyrhythmic mesh of burbling guitars, sweet harmony vocals, swooping Hawaiian guitar, and throbbing talking drums” (Rolling Stone).
